Simely Nordic Ski Team Trip to Biwabik Invitational at Giant’s Ridge Jan 8th & 9th, 2010 -We need to know who's will go by Dec 31, 2009!

Here's the info on the trip to Biwabik. We need a firm commitment for all high school age skiers by tomorrow Dec. 31st. If you are going for sure email Coach Anderson andersoh@invergrove.k12.mn.us

I have additional meet information links at the bottom of the posting.

Simely Nordic Ski Team Trip to Biwabik Invitational at Giant’s Ridge Jan 8th & 9th, 2010

General Information
This is an optional trip for high school age skiers. We will leave via coach driven rented van on Friday, January 8th. I expect to depart around 12:00p.m. We will be returning following the completion of the awards on Saturday, January 9th.
We will be staying at a home owned by Tom Gustafson, Sibley’s Nordic Ski Coach. We have been invited to share lodging with Sibley’s skiers. In case of emergency, Coach Anderson and Coach Sedler can be contacted via cell phone (651) 338-1035 and (612) 751-0260 respectively.
If you have any questions prior to our trip, I may be reached in my classroom (651) 306-7226 or at my home number (651) 450-7149 later in the evening.

Costs
We are working to make this an inexpensive trip for the skiers,$40 per skier. The meet registration fee is $13. Dinner on Friday night is $6. Other funds will be used for van rental and gas.
Additionally, we will need to bring food for a shared breakfast on Saturday morning. We also suggest bringing food for a bag lunch on Saturday to eat after the race. The skiers should bring a healthy assortment of snacks with them to eat as their races allow during the day on Wednesday. We recommend that each skier bring $20-$25 in pocket money for other minor expenses or for race t-shirts.

Trip Expectations
We are on this trip to attend a ski meet as guests in Mr. Gustafson’s house. All behaviors must keep this purpose in mind.
Boys will be lodged on one level of the house and girls will be staying on another level. And, of course, all Minnesota High School League rules apply to athletes at all times.
All skiers will need a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag. We will be camped out on wood floors.
The Simley Nordic Ski Team is a wonderful group of young people. We expect no problems. Have a great time!

Meet Schedule
The boys’ classical race will start at 10:00a.m. The girls’ classical race will start at 12:00 noon. The boys’ freestyle race will start at 1:30p.m. The girls’ freestyle race will start at 3:00p.m. Skiers will only ski one race. They will choose between the classic and the freestyle disciplines.

Clothing
The weather in Minnesota is variable, thus be prepared for weather from totally tepid to fully frigid. Bring plenty of clothes that may be layered for any weather condition. There is no need for fancy or high priced clothing, however we expect skiers to be properly dressed for what Northern Minnesota can present.

Trivia
The town of Biwabik is named for an iron rich layer of rock found in the Iron Range. During the Lower Proterozoic, a sea deposited this layer of rock, which is approximately three billion years ago. The word biwabik itself comes from an Ojibwa word meaning “fragment of iron.”

Directions to Giant’s Ridge

Giant’s Ridge’s web site says it takes 3 hours to get there from the Metro. I think it will take more like 4 hours.
Take I35 North- 120 miles; Merge onto MN-33 North via exit number 237 toward Cloquet/Iorn Range- 20 miles; Merge onto US-53 North until you reach Eveleth- 36 miles; Take MN-37 exit into Gilbert- 1 mile; Turn right onto MN-135 through Biwabik- 9 miles, Turn left onto County road 138-3 miles; The Lodge at Giant’s Ridge will be on your left.

Today we had another good showing by the Simley Nordic Skiers. We're becoming more competitive and doing well for such a young team. Joe T's 3rd place finish for the boys is noteworthy.

For the record, Shayla is to be credited or blamed for the meet's photos.

Dec. 15th Meet Hosted by Simley @ Sibley

Our skate race will be at Henry Sibley High School. We are scheduled to start at 4pm, but will no have kids wait in the cold if everyone is ready to go. Please see the map below.

Race time temperature is forecast to be in single digits with a windchill of about zero. We ask that parents double check that all skiers have proper gear. A blanket is a great way for skiers to stay warm while they're waiting for their race to start.

We will be competing against North, AFSA/MSA and Sibley. Good fun will be had by all.

In other news, we are still working on finding a snowmobile to purchase for trail grooming. I met with Danner Sales after school today. They offered to let us use one sled for a while and to help us find something in our budget. We appreciate any help they can offer us.

In the meantime, thanks to Joel Rud for bring his snowmobiles to the school so we could pack down a base. I'm hoping to groom our course Wed.

Our meet will be at Trollhaugen with a 4:00 pm or soon after start time.

Dec. 10 Meet. Info and Directions/map

No official word yet, but I'm guessing we will be at Trollhaugen for a 6pm race. Please check back, as I'll update the blog as soon as we know more.

The Race time forecast at Trollhaugen is 6 degrees air temp. and a windchill of -7 degrees. These conditions are well within State High School League Guidelines, but cold nonetheless.

Parents and skiers please make sure that you have appropriate clothing for the conditions. Any skier who does not have appropriate clothing will not be allowed to travel, as proper dress becomes a safety issue.

Our rules contract states:
6. You live in Minnesota! Anticipate snow, cold, wind or rain everyday. Be prepared to add or remove layers of clothing to stay comfortable. Proper winter dress is a safety issue. If you are not dressed for potential cold, wind, etc. weather you will not be allowed to practice or travel to meets. Boots, hats and gloves/mittens are required on all bus trips. Proper clothing does not need to be expensive. Skiers need to get in the habit of checking the weather forecasts.

Here are cut and paste directions from Trollhaugen's website.
From Twin Cities:
Take Interstate 35 North (35E or 35W)
Exit onto MN 97 East (turn right) and take for 13 miles
Turn Left onto MN 95 North and take for 6 miles
Turn Right on 243 East (will bring you across a the bridge into WI)
Take WI-35 North (left turn) for 4 miles.
You will come into the small town of Dresser. In Dresser turn right on Cty Rd. F
Take F for 1 mile and Trollhaugen is on the right hand side.

Pre-almost Race Dinner.

The Klimas family came through for the skiers the day before the snow failed them. Interesting looks on some of the boys' faces. Carbo-over-loaded? Click the picture to see what I mean.

It appears the skiers are gathered round the fire place for a reading of “A Visit from St. Nicholas" or "The Gift of the Magi."

Thank you for hosting the skiers.

Pictures and a Poem

The team is doing a great job of remaining positive in the midst of our little snow drought. Lots of smiles at practice today. Way to go Spartan Nordic!

Our Snow

Sad, mad
awful, bad.
No snow here,
no snow cheer.
Happy, glad
I'm not mad.
Snow's a com'n
I'm a hum'n.
Flakes a make'n,
We're not fake'n.
Snow, snow, snow
watch it blow.

We Need All the Boosters We Can Get (Letter Below)

We sent this letter home with the students last week. I hope they all made it into the parents' hands. Just in case, here is the info again.

Also, we have several students who are missing fees and other eligibility paper work. Our first race is scheduled for next Tuesday, Dec. 1. Please ask your skier if they have turned everything in. They have been told and should know if they need something.

Dear Parents of the Nordic skiers,

My husband Steve and I realize that the Nordic ski program is in need of funds so
our skiers can train on a course and Simley can host home meets. Therefore we are willing to start a booster club for the Simley Nordic ski program. We will be having the first meeting this Sunday evening November 21st , 7:00 pm at Caribou (by Wal-mart) to elect officers and to get input from the parents, please come, we need your help to grow the program. This is our daughters third year in skiing, and we realized after last year the school only can fund so much. The needs of the program are growing, while budget cuts
are being made.

We have been involved in many sports and activities at Simley, we feel this fundraiser is the most effective and least costly. It is called a Kilometer-a-thon and consists of sending a sponsor form to friends, family, neighbors or local business, asking for their support,

Attached are five “Kilometer-a-thon” letters, which we are asking each skier to fill in their name, who they are sending it to, and a message like “ Aunt Tracy, hope you can support me in skiing this season”. On the other side fill in the address it is being sent to.
Return the forms to Coach Anderson or Coach Sedler by Wednesday, November 25th. We will fold and stamp them and send them out so we can see some results.

Also, we are hosting a pasta dinner to start off the ski season at our home on Monday November 30th, the night before the first meet. We live two blocks from school, so the whole team can all walk here together after practice, get their carb intake, do some team bonding, and be picked up at about 6:30/7ish.

This is our third year doing this and the kids seem to enjoy it.

Thanks for your support, raising money is never easy.

Here Comes the Groomer.

Hurray! The groomer arrived in boxes today. I hauled it home to start assembly tonight. The Tidd Tech 4' Trail Tenderizer with track setter, say that 4 times fast, will give the students well groomed snow to develop their skills on. This is the same groomer that Henry Sibley uses on their course. It works well. Bring on the corduroy.

We're working on a snowmobile. Look for future posts on a booster club being organized by the Klimas family.

Simley Nordic Forms

We have three important forms we need from athletes before starting practice next Monday, Nov. 9th. Click on the first two for printable versions.

1.Physical
2.District 199 Eligibility Form
3.Team rules contract. See below. This can be cut and pasted into a Word document for printing.

1. Being a member of the Spartan Nordic Ski Team is an honor and a privilege. It provides a chance to develop your body and mind. It is both hard work and lots of fun. All athletes need to demonstrate a positive attitude towards coaches, teammates, and officials. You are expected to cooperate with all. No form of insubordination, hazing or harassment will be tolerated, while fun is expected.

2. Practice begins at 3:00 and runs until 5:00. Do not be late. Daily attendance is expected.

3. Practices and ski meets are mandatory for all student/athletes whether you are participating or not. If you miss a practice or a meet, you must have an excuse signed by your parent. Absences for academic reasons require prior approval and a pass from a teacher. An unexcused absence will make you ineligible to compete in the next meet. Detention will be an automatic unexcused absence. Work is not an excuse for missing meets or practices.

4. Care must be used with all Spartan Nordic equipment. School skis need to be protected and kept clean. Students who use school skis will need to put a $50 deposit down to partially cover costs for damage or lost skis. This deposit will be returned if skis do not suffer more than normal wear and tear. The Nordic room must be kept clean and free of wax build up. All skiers need to help clean on waxing days until the room is cleaned. Wax on; wax off.

5. Practices are a time to improve your fitness level and to develop your skills. All team members are expected to remain around the ski practice area at all times. You must ask permission from a coach to use the bathroom, go to a locker, or leave practice for any reason. Friends do not belong at practice unless they are on the team.

7. Academics are at the core of your educational experience. All athletes must be making good behavior and academic choices to stay active on the team.

8. All team members must abide by the MSHSL rules and #199 district athletic policies. These are minimum standards; we, of course, expect better!

9. Communication is an important part of any team. Short notice changes in meet times and locations often occur due to weather conditions. Parents and students/athletes should feel free to discuss concerns with coaches. Please make sure you have contact information on the Emergency Contact sheet. Check the Simleynordic Blog (http://simleynordic.blogspot.com) and watch for emails.

10. If any student/athlete is behaving inappropriately the following steps will be taken. First, the student athlete will receive a verbal warning. Second, the student/athlete will not compete in the next meet. If a student/athlete has frequent or severe behavior issues, the coaches will take actions to remove the student /athlete from the team.

11. The coaches will determine the eligibility of skiers lettering. Skiers who are skiing competitively at the varsity level will be eligible. Seniors who have been on the Nordic Ski Team for multiple seasons or other students who demonstrate extraordinary contributions to the team will be considered for lettering.

12 As many of the skills and the attitudes learned in athletics are applicable to all aspects of life, it is an overt goal of the Spartan Nordic Ski Team to develop students to be happy, hardworking, goal oriented and ethical adults. Learn, try and have a great season!

Lettering Criteria

Coach Sedler and I have spent a lot of time discussing lettering this year. Our expectations contract states the following:

11. The coaches will determine the eligibility of skiers lettering. Skiers who are skiing competitively at the varsity level will be eligible. Seniors who have been on the Nordic Ski Team for multiple seasons or other students who demonstrate extraordinary contributions to the team will be considered for lettering.

With a young team and with many first years skiers we worked to balance the need to reward skiers with making sure that earning a letter demonstrates achievement and dedication.

Thus, for the 2008=2009 season skiers will be awarded a letter if they are a graduating seinor, or have spend a minimum of two years on the team and skied at the varsity level during conference and sections.

Please contact Coach Sedler or me if you have any questions about this policy.

Salute to Seniors

While we are excited to see them moving on to the next phase of their lives, we will miss Zach's and Veronica's multiple contributions to the team. Zach's hard work and quiet leadership were a strong example for all. Ronnie's positive attitude, humor and leadership helped everyone feel a part of Simley Nordic. Thanks for everything!

Section 1 Nordic Ski Championship Tuesday, Feb 3, 2009 @ Valleywood Gulf Course, Apple Valley

Race Schedule
7:30 Skiers Arrive at School
8:30 Bus leaves
10:30 Boys' Classic Race
11:30 Girls' Classic Race
Break *
1:30 Boys' Freestyle Pursuit Race
2:30 Girls' Freestyle Pursuit Race
Awards
4:30 (Estimated time of departure)
5:00 (Estimated tome of arrival)

There is no JV race associated with the section meet. High school JV skiers will be invited to attend for support. While we value the support of our Middle School JV skiers, we will not have them attend so they don't miss a day of school.

*The Freeds will be hosting the skiers for lunch, as they live quite close to the venue. Please look for a permission slip. We will need this slip returned on Monday. Please also send along a water bottle and other nutritious snacks.

The weather forecast for next Tuesday is 19 degrees F. Keep an eye on the weather to make sure skiers have ample warm clothing. A change of clothing is helpful, as skiers can sweat during their first race. The resulting moisture can cool skiers when they are less active.

Driving Directions to Valleywood Golf Course From 494 and Cedar Avenue
Take MN-77 (Cedar Avenue) south for approximately 5 ¼ miles
Take the County Road 38 Exit toward the Zoo, keep left at the fork in the ramp

Travel approximately 3 miles
Valleywood Golf Course entrance will be on the left (just after you cross Pilot Knob Road). Link to site.

Don't try this at home, at school or in the woods. You'll break your skis and maybe your neck.

Jan. 29th JV Conference & First Year Skier Championship Skate Race

The Classic Suburban Conference JV Nordic Ski championships will be held at Mahtomedi High school on Thursday, January 29th @ 3:15 p.m. There will be two races. One will be for JV skiers. The other will be for skiers in their first year. It's a great chance for kids to ski against others with similar experience.

**This is for JV skiers only** The varsity skiers will be competing on 1-27.

Mahtomedi is located NE of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The street address is: 8000 75th St. North, Mahtomedi, MN 55115. If you click on the map it will get a bit larger.

The ski course starts just north of the tennis courts. At least it did last year. Here is a link showing where the race will start.

Our ski course is groomed. Please don't ski on it until Monday so that it has a chance to set up. It also looks like we may be able to host our classic meet at home on Thursday.
