Simley Nordic Winter Break Workout Record

The log below it to be completed and turned in by all Nordic Skiers.  Family plans and weather conditions make group practices impracticable during holiday breaks.  Each skier is, however, expected to work out individually or with others.  Ski Battle Creek, The Ravine, Lake Elmo, Lenannon Hills or other venues where we may hold meets.  Run, bike, ski, snowshoe, play tennis or participate in other vigorous activities that will build fitness, strength and balance.  (Shopping doesn't count :( )

We expect everyone to come back relaxed and fit.  Enjoy time with family and friends!  We will be putting a weekend trip together to Itasca around Jan 19.  Please keep an eye on the blog.

Meet Two is at Trollhaugen instead of Battle Creek.

We will leave shortly after school and return home about 9pm.  We'll have kids call from the bus as we approach school.  Here is my guess at start times.  Boys or girl skiers may go out first.

Boys Varsity - 6 pm (Mass start OR waves of 1 per school every minute) -  ~5km

Girls Varsity - 6:30 (Mass start OR waves of 1 per school every minute) -  ~5km

Boys JV - 7:00 Mass Start - ~2.5 km

Girls JV - 7:05 Mass Start - ~2.5 km

All skiers should have the following:

  • warm clothes appropriate for the weather to ski in with additional layers available for watching teammates race.

  • a healthy pre-race snack and meal after skiing.

  • homework for down times

  • proper mindset, for varsity skiers this is a full on race go, go, go.  JV skiers should ski fast and improve your fitness and skills.  New skiers relax there will be skiers from other teams just like you.  learn to get up hills, turn and have fun.

      First snow, Rugby and Angels

Good week of  training.  After a day of hill running and another day of 400's on the track, our goal for Friday's practice was to have the students do some running and have big smiles.  We played a touch version of rugby called booger ball and ended practice with snow angels.

      More Snow on the way!

First Meet & Middle School Band Concert Conflict

Our first meet of the year will be at Trollhaguen in Dresser Wisconsin on Dec. 11th starting at 6pm.  This is the same night as the Middle School Band Concert.  Skiers who play in the band should attend the concert instead of the ski meet.  Academics take precedence over athletics.   We expect all  skiers will have noteworthy performances with either skis or instruments.  .

At this time you will be charged a $1 service charge per item (bring cash). We request that you price your merchandise reasonably (whole dollars only). If you are unsure of how to price a particular item, we will advise at check-in. You may pick up your money and/or any unsold equipment from 2:00 to 3:00pm on Saturday. Any money or merchandise not claimed by 3:00pm will be considered a donation to the Minnesota Youth Ski League.

Parent Meeting 6:00 pm Thursday Nov. 15th in High School Library

This meeting is for all Nordic Parents.  We will go over expectations, equipment and hear from the Booster Club.  Let's come together to create an outstanding season.  The meeting will be in Simley's Library.

Great first day of practice.  Both Coach Sedler and Coach Anderson were impressed by the students attitude and effort.

      Simley Nordic Expectations

      1. Being a member of the Spartan Nordic Ski Team is an honor and a privilege. It provides a chance to develop your body and mind. It is both hard work and lots of fun. All athletes need to demonstrate a positive attitude towards coaches, teammates, and officials. You are expected to cooperate with all. Hazing or harassment will not be tolerated, while fun is expected.

      2. Practice begins at 2:45 and runs until 5:00. The vast majority of practices are held on campus. Occasionally high school skiers may meet at an off site venue.

      3. Practices and ski meets are mandatory for all student/athletes. If you miss a practice or a meet, you must have an excuse signed by your parent. Absences for academic reasons require prior approval.

      4. Care must be used with all Spartan Nordic equipment. School skis need to be protected and kept clean. The Nordic room must be kept clean and free of wax build up. All skiers need to help clean on waxing days until the room is cleaned. Wax on; wax off.

      5. Practices and meets are a time to improve your fitness level and to develop your skills. Success is measured by effort, attitude and improvement as well as by race times.

      6. You live in Minnesota! Anticipate snow, cold, wind or rain everyday. Be prepared to add or remove layers of clothing to stay comfortable. Proper winter dress is a safety issue. Skiers need to get in the habit of checking the weather forecasts.

      7. Academics are at the core of your educational experience. All athletes must be making good behavior and academic choices to stay active on the team. Students first; athletes second.

      8. All team members must abide by the MSHSL rules and #199 district athletic policies. These are minimum standards; we, of course, expect better!

      9. Communication is an important part of any team. Short notice changes in meet times and locations often occur due to weather conditions. Please check the blog often.

      10. We are a team of athletes from grade 6 to grade 12. We work to meet the individual developmental needs of each skier.

12 The skills and the attitudes learned in athletics are applicable to all aspects of life, it is an overt goal of the Spartan Nordic Ski Team to develop students to be happy, hardworking, goal oriented and ethical adults. Learn, try and have a great season!
