Parent Meeting Thursday, Nov. 17th @ 6pm in Flexible Learning Space (2nd Floor between Simley and the Middle School)

This meeting is for all Nordic Parents.  We will go over expectations, equipment and hear from the Booster Club.  Let's come together to create an outstanding season.  The meeting will be in the flexible learning space next to the ski room.

Meeting Agenda to include:

  • introduction of coaches
  • review of team expectations
  • information on equipment and dress.
  • booster club information
  • fundraiser?
  • meet schedule
  • trip to Biwabik and Itasca (not a school trip)

Simley Nordic Expectations

1.  Being a member of the Spartan Nordic Ski Team is an honor and a privilege.  It provides a chance to develop your body and mind.  It is both hard work and lots of fun.  All athletes need to demonstrate a positive attitude towards coaches, teammates, and officials.  You are expected to cooperate with all. Hazing or  harassment will not be tolerated, while fun is expected.

2. Practice begins at  3:00 and runs until approximately 5:00.  The vast majority of practices are held on campus.  Occasionally high school skiers may meet at an off site venue.

3.  Practices and ski meets are mandatory for all student/athletes.  If you miss a practice or a meet, you  must have an excuse signed by your parent.  Absences for academic  reasons require prior approval.

4. Care must be used with all Spartan  Nordic equipment.  School skis need  to be protected and kept clean.   The  Nordic room must be kept clean and free of wax build up.  All skiers  need to help clean on waxing days  until the room is cleaned.  Wax on;  wax off. No school skies will be issued unless students have a proper ski bag.

5.Practices and meets are a time to improve your fitness level  and to develop your skills. Success is measured by effort, attitude and improvement as well as by race times.

6.  You live in Minnesota!  Anticipate snow, cold, wind or rain everyday.   Be prepared to add or remove layers of clothing to stay comfortable.   Proper winter dress is a safety issue.  Skiers need  to get in the habit of checking the weather forecasts.

7.  Academics are at the core of  your educational experience.  All athletes  must be making good
behavior and academic choices to stay active on the  team.  Students first; athletes second.

8. All team members must abide by the MSHSL rules and  #199 district athletic policies.  These are
minimum standards; we, of  course, expect better!

9.Communication is an important part of  any team.  Short notice changes in meet times and locations often occur due to weather conditions. Please check the blog often.

10.  We are a team of athletes from grade 7 to grade 12.  We work to meet the individual developmental needs of each skier.

11. The skills and the attitudes learned in athletics are  applicable to all aspects of life, it is an overt goal of the Spartan  Nordic Ski Team  to develop students to be happy, hardworking, goal  oriented and ethical adults.  Learn, try and have a great season!

Welcome to the Start of the 2016-17 Simley Nordic Season

We are anticipating a year of snow and smiles.  Our season officially starts Nov. 14th.  We will meet outside of the ski room on this day.  Captains are running practices starting today.  At this time we are having these practices for high school students and past team members only.  Please contact Coach Anderson or Coach Sedler if you have a Middle School student who is dying to participate in captians' practices.

A parent meeting is also in the works please stay tuned to this page for a meeting time and place.

In the mean time, here are our team expectations.

Last Meet Feb. 9th and Feb. 11th Banquet Info. (Updated 2-8-16)

One last race.  We will be skiing in the Infinity Bowl II with the Math and Science Academy on Tues Feb, 9th at Lake Elmo.  The meet will start at 4:48pm.  The unusual start time is to include 8 and two  factors, as the figure eight is the symbol of infinity.

This will be an informal meet with an interesting start and finish.  Details will be released later.  MSA has promised S'Mores.

We will not have a bus and encourage car pooling. If rides are a problem please contact coach Anderson.  Our goal is for this to be a fun event that ends the racing with a enjoyable ski.  No need to wear uniforms, but silly hats are encouraged.

Banquet Info.
Our awards banquet will be on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 6 pm in the Middle School IMC.  Please Check back on what to bring.

6:00-7:00

Section Meet Info and a Weather Report by Frankie MacDonald

My favorite part of the video starts at 1:14 minute.  A little information about Frankie MacDonald.

Stay tuned to weather. Let's hope Frankie MacDonald missed on this one.   I'm seeing different snowfall prediction maps.  It looks like we could get a few inches to over a foot depending on the storm path.

From the Meet Director:

The report that I have head from Wirth is that the Hap Loop (man-made loop) is really our only option. We will do two laps for each race. We will do the long downhill (old tubing hill/10th fairway) north of the chalet. We will bypass the upper stadium. The lap cutoff will be outside the stadium, about 300 meters from the start/finish. The total race distance is approx 5.5K.

If the temps are cold enough, which I think they will be, so that the track stays firm, we will set the classic track best line, and then have the groomer remove the tracks for the skate race.

The schedule is as follows
8:30 - Final entries due at Par 3 building
9:00 - Coaches meeting
10:00 Girls Classic
11:00 Boys Classic
2:00 Girls Skate
3:00 Boys Skate
4:00 Awards

Race Date and Location Change

Our race this week will be classic technique on Wednesday at Lake Elmo.

This change will give us better snow  conditions and improved weather.

Please contact us if this change is a problem for any skiers. When possible we avoid Wednesday competition because of potential conflicts.

Thank you for being flexible during our season.

Mesabi Invite through Tuesday's scheduled meet.

Remember to cover up like these smart skiers if If the air hurts your face! Here's a link to their Mesabi Invite meet results.

Cold continues as a theme for next week.  We are scheduled to have a classic race on Tuesday.  The forecast is maybe looking too cold to compete.  We are also struggling to find a venue with adequate snow for classic skiing.  Stay posted as Minnesota weather continues to test and build our character.

On the bright side, our campus ski course is groomed, tracked and ready for practice.

Grade 7, 8 &9 Race at St. Thomas

We will leave school at 2:45 for these fun grade level races.  I do not have race format information as of posting.  We are planning to ski in the area between St. Thomas School and Rogers Lake.  We will return approximately 5pm.  We'll have skiers communicate more precise arrival times from the bus.

It is good to be skiing!
